PLAN

  • Use a drawing on graph paper to plot out how you will store your belongings before moving in. Store the items you’ll most frequently need access to in the front, and others in the rear.
  • Place your most valuable items in the back of your unit. This will prevent others from seeing the items while you access your unit.
  • Leave an aisle down the center of your unit so that all items are accessible.
  • Store heavier boxes and items closer to the ground and lighter ones on top.
  • Disassemble large items such as tables, bed frames, book shelves, etc. to save space. Use shrink wrap to keep the parts together. Place necessary screws, Allen wrenches, bolts, etc. in a zip-top bag and use packing tape to adhere the bag to the shrink wrapped parts.
  • If possible, store couches on end to save space.
  • Be sure all appliances are empty, clean, and completely dry before storing. Leave appliances slightly ajar to prevent mildew build-up.
  • Use the inside of appliances, dressers, and other furniture to store smaller items.
  • Group similar items together and label accordingly.
  • NEVER store any potentially dangerous substances including gasoline, compressed gas, kerosene, propane, motor oils, corrosive chemicals, paints, cleaners, biological wastes, asbestos, fertilizers, or propane. This includes any residue that may be left behind in lawn equipment, vehicles, or grills.
  • Firearms, fireworks, ammunition, and other potentially explosive items may not be stored.
  • Use our size guide and discuss your storage needs with one of our knowledgeable leasing professionals to make sure you have enough space for the items you’re storing. This will save you the hassle of moving items twice.

ORGANIZE

  • Use free standing shelves to help organize your unit.
  • When disassembling electronics such as computers and sound systems (which may require multiple cords), place small color-coded stickers on the cord and the same colored sticker on the appropriate item. This will save you from the hassle of trying to match cords at a later time.
  • Label boxes on all sides using our handy, color coded Household Moving Labels.

PROTECT

  • Plastic totes are great to use for storage because they have tight-fitting lids and stack easily.
  • Use furniture pads between stacked furniture to prevent scratches.
  • Cover mattresses in the appropriate sized mattress cover to protect from dust and dirt.
  • Store paintings & mirrors on end rather than flat. Our specially-designed picture and mirror boxes offer two layers of protection.
  • Use Fragile labels to clearly mark any boxes that contain breakables. Most YourSpace Storage locations offer these brightly colored labels for sale.
  • To prevent rust, rub a small amount of machine oil on tools, bicycles, and equipment.
  • Drain all equipment and machinery (including vehicles) and clean before storing to prevent any type of fluid leaks or spills.
  • Never store any food items (including bird seed and dog food). Plants should also not be stored in your unit. This will prevent any unwanted guests.

INSPECT

  • Inspect your storage unit at least monthly.
  • Be aware of your surroundings while visiting the facility. If you notice anything suspicious, do not hesitate to contact our staff immediately.
